Amber Heard new film In The Fire: Johnny Depp's ex wife plays a psychologist

Amber Heard's new film, In The Fire, came out over the weekend. The thriller movie, written and directed by Conor Allyn (No Man's Land, I'm No Longer Here), had its world premiere at Taormina film festival in Sicily last Saturday 24 June.

In her lead role, the actor plays Grace Burhham, a psychiatrist from New York who travels to work in South America, starring alongside Spanish actor Eduardo Noriega (Open Your Eyes) and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. star Luca Calvani.

“It’s a beautiful movie about the almost supernatural effect and force of love. It is about the boundaries that love can cross and its creation, and really about the overwhelming power that love has,” Heard told People magazine ahead of the premiere. "I don’t want to sound cheesy about it, but it’s a movie about love.”

It is Heard's first film release in the wake of Amber's legal battle with her ex-husband Johnny Depp, who sued the former twice for defamation both in the UK, in 2020, and in Virginia, US, in 2022. Filming took place between the two trials, in both Ostuni, Italy, and Guatemala (the actor flew from Guatemala to Virginia to attend the trial).

"The trial was looming over us. We felt the gravity of this huge media machine building against all of us, and the camaraderie of the shoot felt like a good distraction,” Heard's costar, Luca Calvani, told Variety at the film's premiere over the weekend. Amber Heard will also reprise her role as Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is released in December this year.

Here's what you need to know about In The Fire.

Plot

In In The Fire, Heard is a psychiatrist from New York who travels to south America in the 1890s in order to treat a boy who had mysterious powers – but faces mistrust from the locals for both her gender and her practising of a new science, just years after the published works of Sigmund Freud.

“Set in 1899, the film follows a 38-year-old American psychiatrist as she arrives on a rich farm in Colombia after being called to solve the case of a disturbed child following increasingly insistent accusations that the child is the devil," a film synopsis reads.

Cast

Together with Heard, the In The Fire cast includes Eduardo Noriega, most famous for his starring roles in the Spanish language films of director Alejandro Amenábar: Open Your Eyes (1997) and Thesis (1996). Also starring in the film isThe Man From U.N.C.L.E. actor Luca Calvani.

Child actor Lorenzo McGovern Zaini plays troubled child Martin Marquez, while Sophie Amber, an actor and ballerina, plays the character of Isabelle (under the acting stage name of Sophie Cannell).
